of Linux...

"omG! you use linux? u be geek!"

*sigh*

common perception back home, isnt it? well, atleast for me it is. its not like i hate linux or anything but hey, i dont like it much either. this is like a bangladesh-zimbabwe cricket match to an indian cricket fan. even when theres nothing to do, the last thing he will do is waste time watching this. there are many things that ppl have opinions abt. loads of things they care abt. and then theres things they couldnt give a rat's badly nibbled posterior abt...

Encounters of the OS kind ...
the first time i saw linux... that would be somewhere near home, at one of my friends place. he used to go on raving abt it. and ppl consider him a geek. an idiot, yes, but a geek. (me? hey i just said hes a "friend" didnt i?). it was Redhat, if i remember right. i wasnt really impressed. upto then, the only thoughts i had on other OS were all of "duh...". like i said, i couldnt care less abt it. and then, one fine day, i decide to enroll myself in the *ahem* INTERNATIONAL Institute of Information Technology (much to the anger of the poor masses *sniff*). on my first few days, i got along pretty decent for all my minimal needs with lab1. yes, the very same ancient lab1 where we used to have c-prog labs. seems a ling time ago, doesnt it? whatever... so then, after abt 3 days of rotting in lab1, i decided to take the step up, take the risk and enter lab2...

Lab 2
i had been terrified by the few reports that i had been given abt the notorious lab2. now, in retrospect, i guess i was just way too paranoid.there were terrifying reports from those brave few who had the guts (or the lack of brains) to venture into lab2 on their first day here (i later found out, some of those foolhardy ppl included supreeth and smiley!). but what the hell? how bad could it be? so, for once, careful me decided to put my time (and honour and life!) on the line to get access to some decent computing power. surprising isnt it, but for every 9 of those ppl who had been interacted with in lab2, there was always one of me - unscathed from the ordeal. and then, i behold for the second time in my life - LINUX

Linux
so what if it wasnt windows? well, it had that start button didnt it? that thing which looked like a little red hat? and there was a mouse wasnt there? it looked kinda simple, didnt it? but something was just not right. i was too uncomfortable using it. even now, sometimes, i am. no, i aint scared (scared of an OS??! HOLY!!), i dont detest it. it just doesnt feel right. why should i waste my time installing drivers from somewhere else, when i had them all in windows? why
should i waste so much time selecting stuff when all i need is an OS? that too an OS where i had to open a terminal and type stuff to get somewhere. and me being in ECD, i dont really care abt tinkering with linux, i just need an OS. one which can run simulations (one day before assignment submissions), run games without conflicts (the MAJOR purpose, ie), with which i dont need to mount stuff everytime i need to do something (me hate the process!), one for which i dont need to scour the net just for drivers. is this an anti-linux rhetoric? naah... its just one of those innumerable things i dont care abt. windows.. linux... linspire... what much of a difference does it make? does it wotk? sure, bring it on... i can live with that...

I hate my rhymes
(But I hate everyone else’s more)
I’m riding on the back of this pressure
Guessing that it’s better
I cant keep myself together
Because all of this stress

Nice blog. How about enabling comment verfication or whatever its called, because spam is a pain.
For home users, using Linux is great because of all the hype. But linux really has done wonders for the IT community. The concept of having the liberty to develop an operating system and modify it and distribute it without making people pay for it is a step toward reviving the art/science of computers as opposed to the business of it.

Badri.... First of all why aren't u posting anything in ur url?? And yeah I too agree with u. We need PCs here to play games. Look all those geeks in IIIT using WINDOWS to play CZ, Battle Field etc.,

And yeah "for every 9 of those ppl who had been interacted with in lab2, there was always one of me - unscathed from the ordeal" It's Obvious that you escaped because of ur usual comments and special jokes :)
