Jimmy: give me a better word for interesting
apocalypso00: (to his messenger, ie)
apocalypso00: lemme think
Jimmy: as in "the absence of interesting books in/from? the library"
apocalypso00: u type real slow
apocalypso00: shame on ya
apocalypso00: engrossing?
apocalypso00: captivating? :P
apocalypso00: ah...
Jimmy: anything else>
apocalypso00: spellbinding? :D
apocalypso00: lets see....
Jimmy: not something superlative
apocalypso00: exciting?
apocalypso00: gripping?
apocalypso00: inquisitivity-inducing??
apocalypso00: "appealing to our tastes"?
apocalypso00: mesmerizing?
apocalypso00: cant think of any more :(
Jimmy: the point I'm tryig to make here is tht as a consequence of such whatever-ing books in the library.....
apocalypso00: gimma a min, i'll keep thinking
apocalypso00: "respected dean, two things", said jimmy narang, standaing tall
Jimmy: *absence od such books, that is
apocalypso00: "firstly, the new books procired by our library dont appeal to the general populace"
Jimmy: ah
Jimmy: wellpu, well put
Jimmy: *appealing*
apocalypso00: as an afterthought, the neta-like narang added "we are the people who read the books. we have our fingers on the pulses of what is new in the world of literature"
Jimmy: wah! wah! pray keep going...
apocalypso00: "so", jimmy continued, "i believe it would be in our best interests if WE the students would be given the right to select the books procured by the library"
apocalypso00: "of course", jimmy was quick to add, "i dont mean we get ALL the say"
Jimmy: I'm humbled by your ability to put in words so beautifully and effectively what i've been trying for the last hour
apocalypso00: "all we want is to be given some basic say in what books are procured" he said, as his voice was drowned in the thunderous applause
Jimmy: *sob* (wiping tears off)
apocalypso00: "not only will this improve the number of people who read books, but this will increase the number of people who go to the library", he added as the applause whithered off...
Jimmy: Im giving you a standing ovation right now...
Jimmy: wait....
Jimmy: eh??
apocalypso00: "after all, isnt that what the library is for? a place not just for academic books, but an oasis of literary knowledge in this fast paced world of e-books and messenger"
apocalypso00: "so" jimmy concluded, "we would be much indebted if we are given a reasonable amount of say on this topic"
apocalypso00: *puts pen-cap back on the pen, and cracke knuckles*
apocalypso00: "you said two things", said the dean
apocalypso00: "go ahead, whatever-your name-is", he added, "please, dont end your moving speech so abruptly..."
apocalypso00: as the deans voice trailed off, and as all the heads in the room turned to look at the imperious jimmy narang, and as students and faculty alike waited with bated breath for jimmy to continue his oration.
apocalypso00: "oh that!", jimmy said
apocalypso00: (with a voice of quiet contemplation)
apocalypso00: hey u thr?
Jimmy: yes.... YES!
apocalypso00: or am i chatting with the monitor
apocalypso00: k
Jimmy: PLEASE CONTINUE!
apocalypso00: as jimmy stood tall in his 6 foot 2 frame to reach the climax of his wonderous speech,....
apocalypso00: the fact that he was clearing his throat raised all sky-high expectations in the occupants of the room...
Jimmy: Aaaaand.......?
apocalypso00: (i know, bad line)
Jimmy: (Even I'm waiting with baited breath to know what happened next)
Jimmy: Hmmm... are you having a writer's block?
apocalypso00: then, jimmy got down on one knee, turned toward raghuram and said, " raghuram, you are the one person i want to spend the rest of my life
with.". the whole room was stunned to silence. taking a ring out of his pocket, jimmy said "Raghuram, will you marry me?"
apocalypso00: :P
apocalypso00: :D
apocalypso00: :)
apocalypso00: :))
apocalypso00: =)
apocalypso00: ;)
apocalypso00: "rofl:
Jimmy: BAH!
apocalypso00:
apocalypso00: not bad, eh?
Jimmy: bugger
apocalypso00: the first part?
apocalypso00: :D
Jimmy: bloody, bloody bugger
apocalypso00: all in one go :_
apocalypso00: :)
apocalypso00: this is the art of writing

Alrite fellows, there has always been a way of getting things done in the campus. That is to present the right things to the right people at the right time. It happens everywhere.
There has always been a say for students in the campus as far as books and their recommendations are concerned. Dr. P K Reddy is more than happy to take suggestions. And in order to push the suggestions hard - all you need is to get a faculty's approval on that.
I still have to say - why don't you guys meet your seniors who can tell you what to do?
What stuff one reads is entirely a matter of personal choice, isn't it?
rofl@ the anti-climax =))
@agastyabhratha
1. i was typing all that to pull jimmy's leg. should be obvious by the ending :P
2. but now that the subject matter of the little convesation HAS been brought up, we were expecting an FSIS on 'literary' matters pretty soon. we wanted to get the point across without sounding too critical of all the bullsh1t being bought by the library.
@halley
1. 'sidney sheldon', if you have happened to read it, is NOT for toddlers :P
2. do you really like reading super-crap books like 'home remedies for the indian housewife' or 'the life of < insert-name-here > baba' or any of those untouched thick old classics (i mean classic books) in the library? if you do, you are the first person ive ever heard of who reads stuff like that. and im willing to bet you are about the only one.
3. recently, i heard a new bunch of books were bought. take the non-fiction top-twenty, for example. how many of those books are there in the library? he buys all old stuff. x(
4. i, personally, hate philosophical crap. people have opinions, they have their own likes. if someone absolutely detests the kind of books the library buys, what should he do?
isnt that where the 'personal preference'-part comes into the picture?

not to forget the not-so-necessary 4-5 copies of "women in love" ...
about non-fiction , its not all that bad if you take it with a pinch of salt.
Non-fiction is a bit like blogs i guess .. its about opinions ... you either like it or you trash the idea and flame the sorry author..
considering the lousy way this post has been presented ... there seems to be more to it than a cure-my-bore yahoo chat the parties seem to have engaged in.It turned out well!
*clap clap*
Ha! Finally a new template! and a much better one. Btw, who changed it?
lol!
At some point even Kiran lost hope that there was no good stuff to read
"Its been long since I've been to the library."
But ,
quote "
What stuff one reads is entirely a matter of personal choice, isn't it? "
unquote
Smiley changed the template because the previous one, beautiful though it was, was giving some problems with posting comments.
And for once and for all, Mr.Halley,
None here deny the significance of reading the Truth, of making ourselves aware of what is happening around us, but what we, as the B-o-Bloggers DO take strong exception to, is your belief that fiction is in some ways inferior to other forms of literature.
Good fiction, infact, is often much more powerful than reality can be, for good fiction captures us, and by making us live in its world, through its characters, delivers its message far more effectively, for we hardly ever become conscious of the fact that we are being preached.
Fiction too, then, is equally capable of helping us make sense of the unknown, helping us to explore new meanings and re-examine attitudes, ideals, and prejudices.
And even if there is no message to deliver, no point to make, there is nothing wrong in letting yourself being carried away by a story, just for enjoying yourself, just for the pleasure of it.
Saying 'No' to fiction would be akin to a man who refuses to dream, for he knows that dreams cannot be true, Someone who refuses to smile, simply because there is so much pain in the world, and someone who is afraid to sleep, for he will not remain conscious.
Therefore, dear halley, If you haven't already done so, when life's been a bit harsh and things have not gone well, try listening to a beautiful story, or read one, (or even watch one!), and just see for yourself what a wonderful thing it can be.
the 'sidney sheldon for toddlers' part was a sarcasm ON another sarcasm :P
the librarian is not IMPOSING them on me, true, but by giving me so few books of the type i like, he is restricting what i read. i dont HAVE to read non-fiction, but if im done with most modern fiction, i have no other choice left :(
(im in that state right about now)
ive read enough non-fiction to know that philosophy doesnt appeal to my tastes.
and look at people's general taste. i bet a single book of wodehouse has been issued more times that half a dozen copies of 'the way of life - by < insert name here > '. its not because people are ignorant. its just that they feel they dont need to be told how to live their lives.
and thats where the library is making a big mistake. in providing TOO many 'alternate' options, it is forgetting to procure proper fiction.
on another note, i must have a read atleast a dozen and a half or so books by reasonably well known indian authors who write fiction/non-fiction. and except four, i didnt like any. __very__ few foreign author books are being bought. i know, i know, people are going to brand me unpatriotic over this too *sigh*. but its a matter of taste, isnt it?
i used to issue atleast three books a month (and read about half a dozen others in the library) during the first year. now, i rarely go to the library. and my appetite for reading has not reduced. im just forced to shift to reading e-books and blogs, due to lack of proper material.
these are the only two reasons i can think of. so, i guess they must be true :P (the type of books, and the authors)
