IIIT as an institute. nearly eight years old. but what has the institute achieved? a reasonable list could be drawn up, but im too lazy to do that. lets say, we have a decent name among ppl who write aieee, and we have some basic brand value as an institute. not much more than that surely? oh shit, wait-a-min, dawg, we aint here for a wee-little vacation, are we? what is the price we pay for being in this institute?
1. 80k-odd per annum (while my friends back home spend some 30k on education)
2. living in a hostel fourteen hours away from home (frankly, i couldnt care less where i lived, and i kinda like hostel-life, but maybe thats just me)
3. staying in a badly fcuked up city like hyderabad (atleast for me)
4. sitting through tooth-numbingly-boring classes by *ahem* good faculty
5. listening to and putting up with the research-institute tag they seem to over-emphasize on
6. no canteen. get it? NO CANTEEN!! *wails loudly, breaking monitor*
7. *replaces monitor* the exhilaratingly-interesting campus life
8. not just staying in a dumb city like hyderabad ( where you dont get buses after 11 . is this even a city?), but staying miles away from something which closely resembles civilization).
9. not just doing all their stupid assignments, but putting up with the crappy grading scheme. now, top that off with attending nearly all classes AND listening to the *ahem* esteemed dean telling us not to waste time, you just have to wonder whether all this is really worth it.
so, is it worth it? no, not the city. hyderabad sucks. unconditional. i mean the stay in iiit. well, look at the recent placement-fiasco (although i know very little on that). seen their vision-2010 or whatever-it-is? add that to the apathetic faculty, and all this gets so terrifying medusa would have fits. *ack*
now why did i come here? to iiit? my state rank (not AP thankfully) was decent enough in aieee to probably get electronics in NIT trichy (some guy below me got it, i guess) or worst case suratkal. so, why did i choose iiit? well, there were three major reasons - single room, placements and hyderabad. (i thought hyderabad was a city)
while the initial euphoria of not rooming with anyone else subsided, and when the totally wrong impression i had of hyderabad evolved to what it is now, i was left with just one reason - placements. of course, now, i could add quite a few more reasons. but then, for each reason i could give for being here, i could probably give two why this place sucks.
so, what? just grin and bear it? no idea. either noone really seems to care much or they live in a different dimension to me. and besides what can be done? im still waiting for an sfis to talk about the grading system. nothing can really be done about the (lack of) faculty. the canteen ideas never seem to take off, i dont even know who is on the campus life council. assuming there is one, of course. hyderabad wont change. so, i'll just have to wait for some three years to get away from here (less than three if i can get rid of the MS thing i have to do)
but im not some ungrateful prick (i mean the ungrateful part). the institute does, of course have it advantages, but thats beside the question. the question is -
was all this worth it? or just a mistake?

Dunno how complete your study of things is, just try to go around and compare the profile of faculty with other engineering colleges.
I guess, quality matters, not numbers. Our institute can also like other institutes fill 300 students in each batch and decrease the fees to 1/3th or soon, but wud it really be worth saying that 2/3 of ur money and getting 1/3 of the quality and attention ?
Dunno why ppl are so upset with high goals of the institute, why the hell do ppl in India always want to think low and do low ? If Chinese Universities can produce 2000 Phds a year is it justified for Indian visionaries to be satisfied with the current 300 (max) and whine about our poor situation or really do something to change it?
When I came to IIIT, I only knew that quality matter, and you have to pay high price for getting better quality and my father(family) have been a satisfied customer if you think of IIIT being the seller. (yes they cud have got equivalent stuff ahem a btech degree by spending 1/5 the amount in my place and got 1/10 the quality may be?)
Just my opinion...
quality? hey, where is the question of quality if the quantity is ZERO?? the last FSIS, we had asked about faculty for electronics (comm to be specific). what reply did we get? the way the director spoke, it felt as if noone was willing to come here, and they had no replacement in mind for prof VU Reddy. even the prof was not sure whether or not his replacement would come.
arent we already overflowing here on campus? wheres the land for a couple thousand ppl? are we not paying for their "services"? shouldnt we get atleast an "annual report"??
"ppl in india think low". blabbety-blah-blah. high goals? outrageous goals, i would say. think high? 200 phds? how many have been produced so far? zero, i guess. what is the quality of the current phd students? i have no idea, but how good could it be if we take in a hundred more all at once?
high price for quality? its just the high price. why did they increase the intake so drastically? money. they take in more students, keep the fees the same. is 'greed' the key word here? no idea, but its my best guess. besides, why cant we keep hold of our good faculty?
of course, despite that i still like iiit, and i will never repent coming here or anything, but i feel i may have made an honest mistake in assesing my options after aieee.

You probably need time and experience to think about these issues and not speak a lot without seeing the whole picture, I am sure gonna write a blog post about it, read it if you find time.
