IIIT, Hyderabad: Admissions 2008.

On July 4th, the first day of the A.I.E.E.E. counseling, the last seat offered by IIIT-Hyderabad was filled. The closing ranks, however, continued to slip. They may well hit the 3000 mark next year, unless something is done to make the institute's strengths - and there are plenty - known to the general public.

Comparisons can be made with the situation two years ago, which I described in this post. Last year's results are recapitulated below for your convenience. An analysis of this year's statistics and some commentary upon them will follow in Badri's next post, (or mine!).

(All information has been taken from the Central Counseling Board's website. )

*Barring the exception of #157, All the other 59 students in this category have ranks 1776 or above.

NIT Surathkal, CSE217562201
NIT Surathkal, ECE20791843

* Open category seats alloted on the basis of AIRs have been considered.
** Dual Degree equivalents are not offered by these institutes.
*** Around 10-20 students with AIRs in the range 1000-1500, (which could have secured them any seat in the IIIT) chose to use their state ranks to get into the CS/ECE streams in Trichy, Warangal, or Surathkal.

State-wise Breakup of students, IIIT-H *
State / Union territoryNumber of Students
Andhra Pradesh50
Madhya Pradesh26

Chhatisgarh

*Another interesting statistic is this: IIIT was the first preference for 130 of the students, including almost everyone from AP,Delhi, Chhatisgarh and Haryana. It was a second preference for almost all students from MP and Rajasthan, a third preference (or more) for almost all the students from UP, and the seventh preference or more for all students from WB!
Not much correlation was seen between a student's rank and his preference for IIIT.

One small correction (Correct me if I am wrong). The number of Students from Chhattisgarh are 4 and not 6.

With both JEE and AIEE being objective exams, one can't predict the number of students that excel in both the exams. More such students, bigger the closing ranks for IIIT-H and NITs

Also with NITs opening the non-local seats to everyone. People might choose them because of less fee and lots of other reasons...

And finally, what diff does it make if its 2500 or 3500? everyone knows its just a couple of mistakes here and there that decides the rank. And moreover there is no hard and fast rule that a triple digit ranker is better than a 3k ranker once the course starts.

As some profs say.. when Top 10% of the JEE rankers are worthy enough to study in IITs only less than 3% could join. The same thing applies to NITs and IIIT-H as well. So one need to worry only if their insti's rank worsens by 200% :D compared to prev year given that all other external factors stayed the same.

Just a correction.

CG = ChattisGarh,
CH = Chandigarh

You might want to recompile these two stats.

but don't u think opening rank of IIIT is 157 ... rather than 162..

I want to look at it from a different angle... If we view only the regular 4 yr course... then IIIT-H easily outscores every other NIT.... consider 108 seats filling in top 1700... as compared to around 25 CS open cat. seats in all the NITs... what we have to make ppl aware abt is the 5yr research programme... which does not go down well with ppl... try replacing those 60 seats with 4yr seats... our closing rank wudnt cross even 2k... i think we can be proud abt the fact that we got the best AIEEE CS closing rank amongst all instis

I think this is not a case of IIIT slipping up. Consider this.

1. Both AIEEE and JEE are objective exams and logic dictates that there would be a greater proportion of people who would tend to do equally well in both exams as compared to the situation in previous years where JEE was subjective. Generally the mindset in india is to go for a IIT at any cost.

2.The number of seats on offer in the IIT's has gone up almost 50% since the year of our counselling. This includes almost 300+ admissions to 2 new IIT's.

3. State based quotas in NIT's are gone. As an example, earlier IIIT was almost the only decent option for people from AP with ranks after AIR 1000. Perhaps this explains why we are seeing the number of people from AP reduce every year.

4. Quite surprisingly the fee structure is a deciding factor while choosing an institute. Many people tend to chose NIT's for this reason as it costs a quarter of what IIIT would cost.

5. I think we are doing quite well. NIT Trichy has almost the same closing ranks as IIIT in CSE. IIIT however accomodates 108 students in the same rank range as opposed to 22 that Trichy does. I would bet that a large number of those 22 students have opted for Trichy on account of fees and/or location rather then academic reasons.

Thank you for painstakingly compiling the list. Bless M$ that keeps you jobless enough to find time for this :P

Seriously I was also thinking how jobless can you be!!Btw have to agree great work done!!
One thing to be noticed is that MP is coming to the fore these days with MP having as many ppl as Raj, which will mean that we are going to get mroe and more of Bhopalis in this collg in years, even Delhi is coming close to challenging the no.2 status Of Raj! I havnt seen the stats in last years but earlier Raj used to be 2nd with a considerable margin!!
The winds of change! :P
And the closing rank seems to be just a no. as 4 of the last rankers of CSE in our batch are amongst the toppers..

I am growing tired of these accusations of Joblessness. Slander, all of it!

Here I am, a sentimental alumni, spending the little spare time my employer allows me, on something more meaningful than Fooseball or Splitsvilla. And this is how you repay me.

Rascals.
